Congressman John Fleming, M.D., (LA-4) released the following statement, announcing a grant by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to the Caddo Lake Institute:

“Today, I am pleased to announce that the Caddo Lake Institute is receiving a $100,000 grant for Giant Salvinia control in Caddo Lake and Lake Bistineau. This grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) is a 2-to-1 private/public match that was won through a highly competitive bidding process.  Caddo Lake Institute intends to match these funds with up to $250,000 in privately obtained money, resulting in $350,000 being available to control and eradicate this nasty invasive plant. This is an excellent example of an effective collaboration between a non-governmental entity and local private partners.

“We have seen how Giant Salvinia, an invasive aquatic weed, can threaten fish, wildlife, and other plants. This grant, the third for the Caddo Lake Institute from NFWF’s Pulling Together Initiative, will use trained volunteers, public education, and websites to work together for the control of Giant Salvinia."

"The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is pleased to support Caddo Lake Institute’s efforts to bring together partners for the management of Giant Salvinia,” said Jeff Trandahl, executive director and CEO of NFWF. “The Pulling Together Initiative is centered on facilitating exactly these types of collaborations, which are a vital tool in the response to invasive species.”

Congressman Fleming, who is Chairman of the Natural Resources Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, Oceans and Insular Affairs, held a congressional field hearing in Louisiana on June 27, 2011 to address Giant Salvinia’s invasion of lakes.

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit conservation organization.

Along with chairing the Natural Resources Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, Oceans and Insular Affairs, Dr. John Fleming is a member of the House Armed Services Committee. He is a physician and small businessowner and represents the 4th Congressional District of Louisiana.
